Honored Martyr's Story
In 2015, Amal’s family had to abandon their home in the mountains of Saada to flee heavy Saudi bombing and airstrikes. Amal and her family lived in a refugee camp in Aslam, with little to no access to food or running water. Meanwhile, political conditions controlled humanitarian aid and food to be distributed to the people starving in camps. Amal’s portrait by Tyler Hicks was published in the New York Times one week before her death, causing international outcry about the famine and war in Yemen. None of the political powers involved in the proxy war in Yemen seemed moved and continued with the brutality. Amal died of starvation and severe malnutrition.
