Honored Martyr's Story
The US Africa Command was in an ongoing targeted attack of al-Shabaab who had taken over Jilib. On this day, Nurto was standing along the fence of their home when a missile landed close to them and one large piece of shrapnel hit her in the head, killing her on the spot. Nurto’s 70 year old grandmother and two younger sisters were also injured by shrapnel and debris. The story of this civilian family being struck only got out into the press because her uncle was a reporter who tweeted the story. Al-Shabaab banned smart phones for civilian community members under occupation, so no civilian images were released since.
