The Douma suburb of Damascus faced nonstop war since 2012 between the Free Syrian Army and the Syrian National Military. When Assad started a campaign to regain the neighborhood, the military began rounds of heavy shelling killing many civilians. Shahira’s home was in the neighborhood and she was too elderly to flee.
